Charleston, W.Va. –The University of Charleston's Women's Lacrosse team fell to the Walsh University Cavaliers in an 18-6 decision. The Golden Eagles, now 1-4-0, hosted the Cavaliers Wednesday evening at the University of Charleston Stadium.
The Cavaliers cruised by the Golden Eagles in the first half leading 8-2. A 7 goal performance by the Cavaliers' Lane Brunkala proved to be too much for the first year Golden Eagles. With a rally late into the first half and leading into the second half, UC began to claw their way back, cutting the deficit to 5 goals. However, the Cavaliers continued their run firing back with 5 unanswered goals.
The Golden Eagles would go on a three goal run to start the second half. Captain
Nicole Purcell (Cortland, NY) led the scoring charge for the Golden Eagles finishing the day with 4 goals. Standout
Kimberly D'Angelo (Lindenhurst, NY) and freshman Gabrielle Messina both scored a goal apiece.
Coach Tiffany Smith remained optimistic despite the unfavorable outcome. "Walsh came out and were clearly ready to play, and I think our slow start really hurt us in the final stretch. We had a few runs and it got really exciting once the girls started to cut Walsh's lead. At the end, the game didn't go as we planned, but we are still continuing to fight and improve every time we step on this field."
The Golden Eagles (1-4-0), will hit the road with a pair of away contests; first taking on Pikeville University, Saturday, March 16 at 5pm.Â
