Golden Eagles Extend Winning Streak to Five

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Florida – The University of Charleston softball team opened its spring break trip with two wins over Slippery Rock University, 1-0, and Quincy University, 6-5, in extra innings. Charleston moves to 6-2 on the season, winning its fifth straight game.

In game one, Alli Burdette (Charleston, WV) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out eight, only surrendering two hits in seven innings of work. The game's only RBI came on a single to centerfield by Laura Ashlock (Kansas City, MO), scoring Allison Evans (Chapmanville, WV), who had doubled to open the inning.

In the nightcap, Charleston fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the third, but answered in the top of the fourth with a lone run, cutting the deficit to two. After a Rachelle Toppings (Logan, WV) single in the top of the fifth, Kelly Browning (Fairfield, OH) hit a towering two-run homer to centerfield to tie the game. Quincy responded in the bottom of the inning, taking a 4-3 lead.

Leading off the seventh, Toppings again singled to start the inning. She then stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Katelyn Hamilton (Parkersburg, WV) added the RBI on a fielder's choice, allowing Toppings to score and tie the game at 4-4.

In the tiebreaker, Charleston jumped out to a 5-4 lead on a squeeze bunt by Evans, scoring Ansley Warner (Cooper City, FL), who started the inning on second. Alyssa Stanley (Blacklick, OH) singled, and later scored on a passed ball, extending the lead to 6-4.

In the bottom half, the Golden Eagles recorded two quick outs, before allowing Quincy to score on an infield single and cut the deficit to one. With runners on first and second and two outs, Burdette came in for the save, throwing three straight strikes in the Golden Eagles victory. Jessie Rowe (Lavalette, WV) recorded the win in 7 2/3 innings pitched.

Golden Eagles are back in action Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Shippensburg University.
