WHEELING, W.Va. – Charleston split with Wheeling Jesuit University of the MEC North on Sunday evening, taking game one 6-2 before dropping the nightcap 11-1 at JB Chambers Complex. Sunday's afternoon games were delayed four hours because of poor weather in northern W.Va.
Â
GAME 1
Anthony Brunetti (3-3) picked up his third win of the season, allowing just two runs on six hits in Charleston's 6-2 victory over the Cardinals. Brunetti worked all seven innings for the Golden Eagles, striking out nine Jesuit batters while not giving up a base on balls.Â
Â
UC struck first, plating a run in the first but saw Jesuit even the game at 1-1 in the second after taking advantage of Charleston's only error in the game. The Golden Eagles broke the game open in the fourth, scoring three runs on RBI singles by Zach Gunter, Austin Hathaway, and Will Lucas to grab a 4-1 lead heading to the fifth inning.
Â
Charleston added to their lead in the final two innings, scoring a single run in each inning with Lucas plating his second run of the game and Brunetti helping his own cause with a sac fly that scored Grant Bates in the seventh. Wheeling managed to score a late run, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles earned the 4-run, 6-2 conference road win.Â

GAME 2
Wheeling Jesuit erupted for 11 runs in the nightcap to take game two by an 11-1 score. UC scored first, but a five-run second and a six-run fifth gave the Cardinals a 10-run victory to split with the Golden Eagles.
Â
Andy Hoyer (3-3) took the loss for Charleston, working four and a third innings while allowing seven runs on five Cardinal hits. Jack Brunetti, Luke Yingling, and Hunter Townsend all worked in relief for UC. Charleston could only scratch out five hits against Jesuit's starter, Logan Hudson. Brice Arrington reached base on all three of his plate appearances, getting a hit and walking twice.
Â
The split moves Charleston to 8-19 overall and 4-8 in Mountain East Conference play. UC returns to the field Wednesday to face Fairmont State on the road.
