CHARLESTON, W.Va. – University of Charleston's opening round game of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region with Lock Haven University will span two days after heavy and persistent rains forced the umpire crew to call the game in the 10
th inning with Charleston and LHU deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
Â
The game was originally scheduled to be played at 2:30 p.m. but rain forced the start time to be pushed back to 7:30 p.m. later that evening. The Golden Eagles and Bald Eagles breezed through the first five innings as both Alli Burdette and Bekah Slattery commanded the circle to work through the lineups quickly. However, the rains came again, forcing another long delay before heading to the 6
th inning.
Â
Play finally resumed around 10:15 p.m. and this time around each team began to put runners on but Burdette and Slattery were both good enough to work out of jams with runners in scoring position. Charleston and Lock Haven both loaded the bases in the 9
th but each failed to score as Jessie Rowe worked in relief of Burdette to earn a strike out looking and Slattery struck out Alayna Carlson for her 11
th K of the evening.
Â
Charleston and Lock Haven resumes play Friday morning at 10:00 a.m., picking up in the top of the 10
th inning.
