Golden Eagles Split Four Matches at Vulcan Invitational

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The University of Charleston Women's Volleyball competed in another tournament this past weekend, again playing four games in two days. Tallying a total of two wins and two losses, the Lady Eagles improved their overall record to 4-4 following the Vulcan Invitational.  

On Friday, UC saw themselves facing the same California University (Pa.) team that defeated them in Lock Haven the weekend prior. California was again victorious, this time with a score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19). Freshman Janeese VerVelde led the team with 14 kills, while Claire Lambert and Kelsey Matusic each added 13 digs in the loss. Later in the day, the Lady Eagles faced CIAA opponent Winston Salem State, and cruised to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) victory against the Rams. Sophomore Carly Granger played an impressive match with 8 kills and 2 aces. Senior Jordan Wittekind was close behind with 6 kills in the win.

Saturday afternoon opened with a match against NE-10 Champions Adelphi University. UC fought hard, but was overpowered by AU's offense. The Lady Eagles fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22). Megan Mourier tallied 10 kills in the loss. In the second match of the day, University of Charleston faced Davis & Elkins, and finished tournament play with a 3-0(27-25, 25-20, 25-18) sweep of the Senators. Tori Clark and Jordan Wittekind led the attack with 10 kills each, and freshman Amy Hu had 17 set assists in the win.

The Lady Eagles continue tournament play this weekend, traveling to Cleveland, Ohio to play in the Notre Dame College Tournament.
