Golden Eagles Claim Wins Over UVa.-Wise and Ohio Valley

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston earned a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at the Charleston Catholic High School Athletic Complex after defeating both UVa.-Wise and Ohio Valley by 3-1 scores to give the Golden Eagles their fifth victory in a row.

Charleston opened the afternoon with conference foe UVa.-Wise looking to keep their unblemished MEC record intact.  UC and the Cavaliers split the first two sets before the Golden Eagles dialed in their best performance of the match to easily win the third set 25-12 and take a 2-1 set lead.  Wise and Charleston battled back and forth in the final set before UC pulled away late securing the match with a 25-19 fourth set victory to win 3-1.

Jordan Wittekind led the way with 10 kills on 24 attempts giving her over 500 for her career while setter Claire Lambert handed out 23 assists.  Defensively Charleston's Kelsey Matusic had 20 digs and Tori Clark set a career-high in blocks with six for the Golden Eagles.

In the nightcap, Charleston fought off a scrappy Ohio Valley team in four sets for their fifth consecutive win.  UC and the Fighting Scots split the first two sets before the Golden Eagles took a tight third set then closed out the match with a decisive 25-15 win in the fourth.

Shiann White carried the Golden Eagles for much of the match with a double-double performance, totaling 14 kills and 18 digs.  Freshman setter Amy Hu provided a spark off the bench for UC when OVU started to swing momentum their way in the third set to help Charleston pull out the set and retake control of the match.

UC returns to the court Tuesday evening to host Cedarville University. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the CCHS Athletic Complex.
