Charleston Grabs Victories Over Pioneers and Battlers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles improved to 11-8 overall as they picked up wins over Glenville State College and Alderson Broaddus at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex on Friday evening.

Charleston began the afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Glenville State College by set scores of 25-21, 25-7, 25-21.  The Golden Eagles struggled in the first set, squeaking by the Pioneers before coming alive and dominating the second set.  Glenville claimed an early lead in the third, but UC rallied midway through the set and held on for the four-point third victory to finish the Pioneers in three.

The Golden Eagles were led by Megan Mourier's nine kills on 19 attempts and Claire Lambert's double-double coming up with 12 digs and 14 assists.  Freshman Sydney Burt picked up her first career kill as a Golden Eagle in the victory.

In the nightcap, University of Charleston rallied back from two sets down to down Alderson Broaddus 3-2 in a thrilling five-set match.  The Battlers came ready to avenge a loss to the Golden Eagles from earlier in the season and quickly took the first two sets from Charleston.  UC wouldn't let the deficit get the best of their play and rallied back to win sets three and four, forcing a fifth and deciding set.  The Golden Eagles dominated the final frame, sending the Battlers back with a loss after taking the final set 15-8.

Jordan Wittekind tied her career high in kills with 15 to lead UC while Carly Granger and Megan Mourier each added 11, a career best mark for Mourier.  Lambert again paced Charleston with 24 assists and chipped in 17 digs on defense.  Kelsey Matusic anchored the Golden Eagle D with 19 digs and the Golden Eagle front line came up with 21 blocks, led by Jour'Ney Powell's five.

Charleston returns to the court tomorrow in another doubleheader, taking on West Virginia Wesleyan and Malone.  First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Charleston Catholic High School Athletic Complex.
