DANIELS, W.Va. – University of Charleston men's golf claimed the 2017 Mountain East Conference Men's Golf Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs on Wednesday afternoon, holding off a surging West Liberty University team.

The Golden Eagles led by nine shots heading into the final round, but West Liberty got to within one shot on several occasions in the final nine holes. Charleston held hold on and posted a team total of 293 on the final day for a three-day total of 886. WLU shot a tournament-best 287 (-1) on the final 18 holes and finished three shots back for a score of 890.
UC's
Ritwik Jain finished two shots back at 219 to finish third and Charleston's
Lewis Fenn tied for fifth with a total of 221. Despite a scorecard error on Day 1 of the MEC Championship that took him out of any individual award, senior
Justin Westveer rebounded with two straight days of solid golf by shooting 72 & 71 (1-under) to help lead UC to a conference title that had eluded the Golden Eagles for 10-plus seasons.

In their first MEC Conference Championship appearance both
David Scragg and
Mason Weese each came up with rounds that carried Charleston to the trophy, with Weese finishing just outside the top-10 in 11
th and Scragg closing out the three-day event in 20
th.
The Golden Eagles receive the league's automatic berth to the 2018 NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Tournament which will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference at Glade Springs Resort in the spring.Â
