CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- In a game that was back and forth from the opening tip, the University of Charleston was able to hang on to beat Davis & Elkins 66-59 on Monday night at the Wehrle Innovation Center.
The win was the third victory of the year for the Golden Eagles in a game decided by less than 10 points — they were 3-6 in those games all of last season — as they improved to 5-2 on the year.
The lead changed hands 14 times in the game and was tied on nine occasions, with UC's eight-point margin late in the second half being the largest of the game for either team.
Charleston found itself trailing the Senators 57-56 with four minutes left in the game. But thanks to several big plays in the middle by Justus Stanback defensively and six points from Jonathan Tshibuy in the final minutes — including the go-ahead bucket that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good and a crucial three-point play a few possessions later — UC was able to hang on and leave victorious.
After Tshibuy's three-point play made it a five-point game, Stanback made his presence felt on three consecutive trips down the floor. The IUPUI transfer was able to provide great defense to help change a couple of shots in the middle of UC's zone defense and also forced a turnover as the Golden Eagles held Davis & Elkins without a field goal for the final four minutes of the game.
After allowing opponents to shoot better than 50 percent in three of the first six games of the season, the Golden Eagles held Davis & Elkins to just 36 percent shooting on Monday. Charleston also forced 14 turnovers, turning those into 20 points on the other end of the floor.
Keir Anderson led the way for the Golden Eagles, finishing the game with 15 points while Tshibuy added 12. Shaq Speights came off the bench and chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds to join them in double figures.
