Charleston Takes Down Jackets in Four, Sweep Season Series

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles rallied back from a set down to defeat West Virginia State University in four sets Tuesday evening on the Yellow Jacket campus.

How it Happened
Charleston found themselves down five, 21-16, late in the opening set but would score six of the next seven points and tie the game at 22-22 before the host Yellow Jackets took an early 1-0 by closing out the set 25-23. 
 
UC, winners of seven straight against WVSU, wasn't going to let this night be the evening that win streak come to a close and rebounded to win the second set, 25-20.  Charleston used a strong attack effort with 18 kills in the set to even the match at 1-1 heading to the important third set.  The Golden Eagles hammered the Yellow Jackets in the third, 25-8, to gain control of the match against their Kanawha Valley rival from Institute. 
 
Looking to close out the match in four sets and sweep the season series with West Virginia State, Charleston jumped out to a 15-8 lead midway through the set and eventually cruised to a 25-20 set win and finish the Jackets in four.
 
Three Golden Eagles set career marks for digs in a single match as Kelsey Matusic (34), Tori Clark (27) and Carly Granger (21) all had career highs in the defensive category.
 
At the conclusion of the match, Charleston was tied for 2nd in the MEC with a 10-4 record in conference play
