Charleston's Win Streak Ends, Swept by Rams

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston's win streak ends at 8 games as the Golden Eagles get swept by Shepherd University, 5-1 and 12-4, Sunday afternoon at Triana Field.
THE BASICS

Game 1
-Shepherd got the scoring started in the 1st off Charleston starter Jonathan Carr, plating a pair of runs on a Daniel Heleine double down the left field line to take a 2-0 lead.
-UC answered back with a run in the bottom half of the 1st on a Taylor Itnyre single to right field scoring Lee Carneal from second, cutting the lead in half to 2-1 after 1 inning.
-The Rams took advantage of a Carneal error in the third on a line drive that was hit right to him but glanced off the shortstop's glove that would have ended the inning but rather brought in a Shepherd run to make it 3-1 after 3 innings.
-Charleston didn't have problems getting runners on base against Shepherd but couldn't bring them in to score, stranding 8 runners on the bases throughout the 7 innings.
-Shepherd added a pair of runs in the 6th for the game's final tallies, handing Charleston their first loss in 9 games.
 
Game 2
-Charleston got the scoring started in the 1st inning following a leadoff double by Brice Arrington and was later driven in by a Carneal groundout, giving UC a 1-0 lead after 1.
-Shepherd was held off the scoreboard by Golden Eagle starter Anthony Zona until the 4th inning when Heleine homered to left field.  The Rams scored in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to take a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the 6th.
-Charleston cut into Shepherd's lead by scoring a pair of runs on RBI doubles by Nick Wilson and Jeff Somuk, making it 4-3 after 6 complete innings.
-After a scoreless 7th, Charleston became unraveled in the 8th and 9th innings allowing Shepherd to push across 8 runs and cruise to a 12-4 victory and series sweep.
 

CHARLESTON INDIVIDUAL LEADERS 
-Levi Nash worked a scoreless inning in relief for the Golden Eagles in the Game 1 loss.
-Gianfranco Morello was the only Golden Eagle with multiple hits in Game 1, going 3-for-4 at the dish for UC.
-Brice Arrington went 3-for-5 with a double in Game 2.
-Jeff Somuk had a pair of hits in Game 2 including a double while driving in a run.


SHEPHERD INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
-Danield Heleine was 2-for-4 in Game 1, driving in 2 runs.
-Cather Dalton Haymaker was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Shepherd, batting in the No. 9 spot.
-Ryan Pansch earned the win for Shepherd in Game 1, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 7 Golden Eagles.
-Brandon Kirk, Jacob Carney and Heleine each drove in 2 runs in Game 2.

-The Golden Eagles continue a rained-out series from Saturday with Fairmont State University on Monday at Triana Field.
