Charleston Comes Up Short against Indians

CHARLESTON, W.Va.—After notching their first win of the season on Saturday, the University of Charleston Lacrosse Team (1-5) fell to Catawba College (4-2) on Monday afternoon.  

THE BASICS
SCORE -  Catawba 16; Charleston 13
LOCATION - Salisbury, N.C.
RECORDS - Charleston (1-5, 0-0 MEC); Indians (4-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Gianna Pezzulo got the ball rolling for Catawba with a goal less then two minutes in. Samantha Jones answered for the Golden Eagles on the next possession. The Indians tabbed three unanswered goals bringing the score to 4-1 before Charleston's Aryanna Jones would send one past the Catawba goalie. Megan Sheesley scored for the Golden Eagles less than two minutes later, cutting the Indian lead to just one goal.
-Peyton Harris tied the game up for Charleston with her first girl of the game at 21:11. Catawba regained he lead two minutes later with a goal by Kirstyn Kruse. Nicole Purcell tied the game up again for the Golden Eagles bringing the score to 5-5. Catawba took the lead back at 16:07, but Samantha Jones brought the score to 6-all two possessions later.
-Catawba scored back-to-back goals bringing the score to 8-6, but UC went on a 4-0 run to take the 10-8 lead with just over six minutes go to in the first half. Catawba brought the score within one, but Aryanna Jones score her second goal of the game to give UC the two score advantage going into the half.
-Coming out of the break the Indians score three unanswered goals to take the 12-11 lead. It took close to three minutes before Catawba scored their fourth unanswered goal of the game at 17:12. Three minutes later Catawba scored again bringing the score to 14-11. Neither team could finish during the later minutes of the half, but Catawba score back-to-back goals in the final three minutes. Samantha Jones scored her third and final goal of the game with just nine seconds to go, but came up short against the Indians 16-13.

CHARLESTON INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
-Aryanna Jones led the Golden Eagles with 4 goals
-Samantha Jones tabbed 3 goals in the loss.

INDIANS INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
-Kirstyn Kruse scored seven times to lead the Indians while Gianna Pezzulo tabbed 5 goals in the win.

UP NEXT 
-The Golden Eagles are set for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against Wingate University on Tuesday.
