Box Score 1 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Softball team (35-18, 22-10 MEC) split day one of the Mountain East Conference Tournament on Friday. The Golden Eagles edged past Wheeling Jesuit in game one of the day before falling to West Virginia Wesleyan in game two.
THE BASICS
GAME 1 –Charleston 3; Wheeling Jesuit 2
GAME 2 –West Virginia Wesleyan 7, Charleston 4
LOCATION –SALEM, Va.
GAME ONE
-In the top of the fifth inning, Karlie Pinkerton hit a single to shortstop, allowing Rienna Schriner and Natalie Beck to score for the 2-0 lead.
-In the bottom of the sixth inning Dana Achille hit a double to center field allowing Jackie Cramer to score, cutting the UC lead to just a run (2-1).
-In the the top of the final inning, Monica Carter was able to reach on an error by the shortstop, sending Toppings home.
-In the bottom of the seventh Welsh hit a single up the middle allowing DiPerna to score. The Cardinals were unable to send another runner home, falling to Charleston 3-2 in game one.
GAME TWO
-In the bottom of the first inning an illegal pitch sent Tori Pogue home for the Bobcats. Jessica Rodriguez hit a single to center field to allow Olivia Gore to cross home plates bringing the score to 2-0.
-After two scoreless innings, Charleston Shelby Ume hit a single to left field, allowing Bethany Williams to score for the Golden Eagles (2-1). In the bottom of the fourth Brooklyn Waddel hit a single for the Bobcats sending Pogue in to score. Taylor Barnett followed after an error by the UC defense (4-1).
-With Alyssa Stanley on third and Toppings on second, Monica Carter hit a double to center field to score two runs (4-3). Haleigh Christopher reached on an error, allowing Carter to touch third. Laura Ashlock hit a SAC bunt, but reached on a fielder's choice allowing Carter to surprise the Bobcat catcher and score the tying run.
-UC held Wesleyan in the bottom of the fifth, but the runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Bobcats the 7-4 advantage going into he top of the seventh.
-Wesleyan was able to hold UC to 0 runs in the seventh inning taking the victory in game two.
UP NEXT
-The Golden Eagles will take on the Mountain Lions of Concord University, Saturday at noon.
