How it Happened
University of Charleston traveled to Wheeling Jesuit University this weekend to face four opponents from the PSAC in the 2017 Atlantic Regional Crossover Tournament. It marked the second consecutive weekend that Golden Eagle women's volleyball faced four teams from Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
UC went 2-2 their previous weekend against the PSAC, but dropped their final two contests in the MEC/PSAC Crossover, losing to Shippensburg and Slippery Rock. They would get a chance at revenge against each of those teams this weekend, one of which went in UC's favor.
Charleston started the event against Clarion on Friday afternoon, falling 3-1 in the tournament opener. The Golden Eagles struggled in their attack, hitting at .094 in the four-set loss to Clarion. Things didn't get any better in the nightcap, as they posted another loss to Shippensburg, this time in straight sets to the Raiders. UC against couldn't get much going on offense, posting just 26 kills while committing 18 attack errors in the 91 attempts over the course of the match.
Saturday afternoon was another tough one for the Golden Eagles, suffering their fifth consecutive defeat, this time in straight sets to Pitt-Johnstown. UC turned in their worst performance of the tournament, hitting at .000 for the match with 23 kills and 23 errors on 110 attempts. Charleston was able to regroup in their final match, getting revenge on Slippery Rock who had defeated Charleston in three sets last weekend. The Golden Eagles pulled out a four-set victory over Rock, halting their five-match skid after posting their best attack numbers for the tournament to hit at .126. Carly Granger led the UC attack with 12 kills while freshman Jessica Sunnenberg also had double-digit kills (11).
