Golden Eagles Down ABU 3-0

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles (10-12, 5-0 MEC) beat the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus (8-15, 2-11 GMAC) in three straight sets on Tuesday night, marking the end of a three-game skid for the Golden Eagles.

How It Happened

The Golden Eagles began the night with an early exchange of points with the Battlers. However, they would go on to win the set 25-19 behind a strong effort from Janeese Vervelde and Carly Granger; each had five kills. They were helped by an excellent early support performance by Chloe Massaro who had thirteen assists in the set. This battle set the tone for the rest of the game as the Golden Eagles would go on to dominate the Battlers. 
 
Leading by one set heading into the second set, UC battled early in the set and were up 10-8. The Golden Eagles then went on a 9-point streak to go ahead 19-8. The ladies finished the set by going on a 15-5 run to close it out.  The Golden Eagles were led again by Granger and Vervelde who had six kills apiece. The Charleston defense held their own in the second set only giving up 13 points behind the efforts of Kelsey Matusic, Carly Granger and Tori Clark. The set ended with a service ace by Kelsey Matusic and the set ended 25-13. 
 
Charleston rolled in the third set as well. Going on a 14-2 run midway through the set. Granger collected 6 more kills as the Golden Eagles continued to put pressure on the Battler's defense. The made quick work of numerous miscues by ABU and easily took the set by a score of 25-13 for the second time. The final kill was provided by the freshly substituted Sydney Burt and just like that Charleston's losing streak ended.

-Chloe Massaro led the game in assists with 39
-Kelsey Matusic led the game in digs with 15

- Ashlyn McDonald lead ABU with 12 kills and 12.5 points
