PITTSBURGH, Pa. – University of Charleston men's cross country team placed 8th at the Rock Pre-Nationals Saturday at the Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
Slippery Rock University hosted the meet that featured 32 NCAA Division II teams from 10 different states that traveled in to preview the course that will host both the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships Nov. 17 and the NCAA Division II National Championships Dec. 1.
The Golden Eagles were the top Atlantic Region team at the event, finishing in eighth place with 206 points, while Edinboro, who entered ranked No. 1 in the region, placed ninth with 274 points.
Five other schools from the Mountain East also made the trip to Pittsburgh with West Liberty (20
th) as the next best MEC finisher. Concord (23
rd), W.Va. Wesleyan (26
th), Wheeling Jesuit (27
th) and Fairmont St. (29
th) rounded out the conference participants at the Rock Pre-Nationals
The third ranked Colorado School of Mines proved it is worthy of the high national ranking with a dominant performance to win the team title with just 19 points. The Orediggers placed all five scorers in the top eight positions and swept the top three spots for the convincing win. Mount Oliver and Queens tied for second with 119 points, followed by Cedarville in fourth with 158 points and Malone in fifth with 164 points.
A total of 29 teams recorded a score and 303 individual runners finished the 8,000-meter course.
Jack Mastandrea was the top finisher for University of Charleston, again placing in the top-10 with a 6
thplace finish and time of 25:24. David Cecchi was the next Golden Eagle runner across the line in 15th place in 25:54.
UC's scorers were capped by Hunter Riffle in 45
thplace in 26:39, Job Ijtsma in 64
thplace in 27:03 and Liam Mumford in 76
thplace in 27:13.
Sergio Garrido was the sixth UC finisher in 92
nd in 27:28 and Cameron Lee capped the top seven in 104
th in 27:44.
University of Charleston will take next week off before returning to action Nov. 3 at the MEC Championships at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, W.Va.
