How it Happened
The Golden Eagles entered Saturday's match winners of three consecutive matches but were winless in their last three EIVA contests, while the Highlanders came in with just three total wins and were 1-6 in EIVA play. NJIT dominated the Golden Eagles in each of the weekend matches, especially in their attack after hitting at .314 on Saturday evening followed by a .361 performance Sunday afternoon.
Charleston did respond with a better effort against the Highlanders Sunday afternoon, and looked to take an early lead on NJIT holding a 21-16 advantage late in the set. The hosts rallied to tie the set at 22-22, but Charleston still had an opportunity to close out the set at 24-23. Alvaro Gimeno come through one of his 15 kills to erase UC's set point then put NJIT ahead 1-0 after another kill at 26-25.
NJIT handled Charleston easily in the second but a feisty Golden Eagle bunch fought hard again in the third set. For the second time in the match, UC held a late lead looking to get back into the match, but another Highlander rally guided NJIT to a second straight three-set sweep of the Golden Eagles.
