THE GAME
GAME 1
UC sophomore center fielder Colby Johnson put Charleston on the board in the first, belting a solo homerun over the left field wall to start the Golden Eagle hit parade. Charleston's offense provided 13 runs on 14 hits, eight of which were extra base hits.
UC jumped out to a 4-0 after a two-run third and looked poised to run away with Tuesday's matchup with the Golden Bears. However, the club from Beckley, W.Va. rallied with a four-run fifth to even the game at 4-4. Enter Charleston's
Jacob Kaiser who shut down the WVU Tech big inning with three consecutive outs in relief to limit the damage. Kaiser would earn the win, as Charleston used six pitchers on the evening in pregame plan initiated by coach Andrew Wright.
Looking for his first hit of his young Golden Eagle career, freshman catcher
Drew Hefner broke open the tied game with a two-out, two RBI double off the right field wall to put Charleston back on top, 6-4 after five innings. UC added to their lead with runs in the sixth, seventh, and innings powered by a pair of freshmen, Colton Bauer and
Hayden Cartt. Bauer hit a bomb in the sixth inning that still may not have landed and followed with a RBI single in seventh. Cartt turned in the best performance of his limited action this season, going 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a triple from his left field spot.
The trio of Kaiser,
Jordan Peck and
Levi Nash kept the Golden Bears scoreless from the sixth inning on, striking out one each and allowing just a pair hits in their combined five innings.
