THE GAMES
GAME 1
The Golden Eagles broke open an 1-0 opening game with a pair of 2-run homeruns by Steven Davis and Brice Arrington that put Charleston ahead 5-0 after three innings of play. Brandon Harris made his first start in his two season as a Golden Eagle and made the most of his opportunity in the victory, going six innings while allowing just three runs none of which were earned.
Saginaw trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth only to see Charleston hang five more runs in the bottom half the inning to go ahead 10-2. UC added four more in the sixth as the Golden Eagles cruised to the 14-3 win. Jordan Peck threw a scoreless seventh to close the door on the Cardinals, ending their 8-game win streak and hand them just their third loss of the season. Davis and Arrington each drove in three runs for Charleston while Colton Bauer went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's and scored three times.
GAME 2
The tides turned in the second game of Friday's doubleheader, as Saginaw Valley blew open a 2-0 game with seven runs in the fourth on their way to a 10-4 win in the nightcap. Cardinal pitcher Amani Godfrey carried a no-hitter for four and two-thirds innings before a Hathaway line drive up the middle broke up the freshman's solid performance.
Down 9-0, Charleston continued to fight by scoring four runs between the fifth and seventh inning, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Two of Charleston's four hits came from sophomore center fielder, Colby Johnson, who scored twice and drove in a run on triple. Gianfranco Morello added two RBI's for the Golden Eagles. Jack Brunetti was effective in the late innings, tossing three and allowing just one run on two Cardinal hits.
