THE GAMES
GAME 1
UC wasted no time jumping on top of Wise, plating three runs in the first inning of Saturday's doubleheader. Gianfranco Morello put the Golden Eagles ahead on a double down the right field line that scored a pair of runners and later brought in from third on Steven Davis's sacrifice fly to center. Two innings later Colby Johnson hit his first of two homeruns, a solo shot to left field, that made it 4-0 with UC on top.
Charleston starter Adam Jafine was lights out through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth after struggling with his command, walking four consecutive Cavaliers before coach Wright made a move to the bullpen and brought in Jacob Kaiser. Fortunately for UC, they had a five-run cushion and Wise could only bring around three to narrow the Charleston lead to 5-3. Davis added a final insurance run in the sixth, a solo homerun to right, that put the Golden Eagles ahead 6-3. Kaiser shut the door on a Wise comeback, tossing two plus innings without allowing a run to earn the first save of his Golden Eagle career.
GAME 2
The Cavaliers got to UC starter Brandon Harris early in the nightcap of Saturday's twinbill, scoring five runs and lasting just 1/3 of an inning is his appearance. Charleston turned the ball over to Austin Henrich in long relief and the former starter was sensational in his clean up detail. Henrich kept the Golden Eagles in the game, throwing the final 6 2/3 innings without allowing a run and striking out five Cavaliers.
UC evened the score at 5-5 after two innings following a four-run second frame highlighted by a Colby Johnson two-run single. The game remained deadlocked at 5-5 until Johnson struck again in Charleston's final at-bat in the seventh. After UC was able to keep the Cavaliers scoreless in the top half of the inning, Johnson stepped to the plate to lead off in the Golden Eagle half of the inning. The sophomore centerfielder got the pitch he was looking for and ended the game with one swing, a game-winning walk off homerun to left center field that sent the Charleston dugout into an uproar.
