THE GAMES
SATURDAY
Charleston exploded for 14 unanswered runs in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader on their way to an 18-4 win against Concord who currently sits behind UC in the MEC South standings. Adam Jafine cruised in his seventh victory of the 2018 season and remains undefeated in conference play, his only blemish coming at Cedarville early in the year. Hayden Cartt had a six RBI performance which included a grand slam while Jesse Elliott was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, driving in three runs.
Brandon Harris struggled in his start in game two, giving up eight runs in the first inning and failed to get out of the inning before being pulled. Concord went on to defeat the Golden Eagles 14-6 to split the Saturday series.
SUNDAY
A stark contrast to Saturday's offensive explosion, Charleston and Concord started the Sunday's doubleheader with a classic pitcher's duel. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning against the Mountain Lions before the hosts scored a pair of runs off UC reliever Jacob Kaiser, taking a 2-1 lead into the final frame. Charleston nearly tied the game in the seventh, loading the bases with one out but wasn't able to push across the tying run and fell to the Lions 2-1.
UC's bats came alive in the weekend finale, scoring eight runs on 11 hits to cap the weekend with an 8-5 victory and split the four-game series with Concord. Anthony Zona earned his fourth win of the season and remains unbeaten in MEC play at 4-0. Charleston got multi-hit games from Colby Johnson (2-for-4), Anthony Brunetti (2-for-4), and Steven Davis (2-for-3, 3 RBI's). Redshirt freshman Jordan Peck worked two and two-thirds innings in relief to pick up the first save of his young Golden Eagle career.
UP NEXT
Charleston closes out the regular season next weekend with a four-game series with West Virginia State University, playing doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday afternoon. UC heads to WVSU on Friday before welcoming the Yellow Jackets to Triana Field on Saturday for Senior Day.
