Dramatic Walk-off Win in Four Game Sweep of Bobcats

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – UC completed the four-game sweep against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday afternoon, hammering the Bobcats 15-2 in the doubleheader opener before rallying in the 7th inning on a walk-off 4-3 victory in the final game.

THE GAMES

GAME 1
Charleston starter Brandon Harris worked all seven innings in the complete-game win, the third consecutive for Golden Eagle starting pitchers.  UC erupted for nine runs in the second inning to blow the game wide open highlighted by a Gianfranco Morello three-run homerun, his first of two in the game. The Golden Eagles would add six more runs between the third and fourth innings on their way to 15 runs while pounding out 17 hits against the Bobcat pitchers.  Harris's win gives him four on the season and his seventh career victory in his two seasons with the Golden Eagles.

Morello finished the game going 2-for-4 with a pair of homeruns and drove in five.  Steven Davis, Brice Arrington, Colton Bauer and Hayden Cartt all finished with multi-hit games for the Golden Eagles.

GAME 2
Although Charleston put up comfortable wins in the first three games against the Bobcats, game four would be much different.  WVWC starter Chris Metrick was able to keep UC off balance for six innings, limiting Charleston to a pair of runs on three hits and left his Bobcats ahead 3-2 going to the seventh inning. Golden Eagle reliever Hunter Townsend worked out of a jam in a scoreless Bobcat top of seven, getting two stellar catches in left field by Hayden Cartt, one at the fence that robbed WVWC of a homerun, to set up the fireworks for UC in their half of the seventh.

Sean Cliff entered for Wesleyan for the second straight day, which proved to be good news for UC. Drew Hefner drew a 1-out walk and was replaced by Justin Mixon to get speed on the bases.  Hayned Cartt followed with a high chopper over the Bobcat third baseman to put Golden Eagles at first and second.  Enter Charleston's best hitter this season, Ryan Hunt, with a chance to tie or win the game, and he did just that.  He laced a shot to right field that sent Justin Mixon around third looking to score, but a strong throw to the plate made things close.  The Bobcat catcher was unable to field the one-hopper allowing Mixon to slide through for the tying run. Hayden Cartt saw the overthrow from third and never put on the breaks, looking to score the winning run.  Cliff was backing up on the play, fielded the ball and raced to home plate looking to tag an oncoming Cartt.  The two dove at nearly the same time, Cliff tagging the freshman before reaching home but couldn't keep the ball in his glove allowing a sliding Cartt to cross home plate for the dramatic game-winner.  Pandemonium ensued as the UC bench emptied behind home plate, bringing water coolers and bottles to join in the celebration of the 4-3 win.
