Golden Eagles Win Second Game Of The Weekend, 3-1

CHARLESTON, W, Va. – Charleston played their second game of the weekend with a morning match against the Mountain Lions of Concord University. Charleston came out on top winning the match 3-1.

In the first set, Charleston was able to tally 12 kills in a back and forth set. Despite only putting up a .093 hitting percentage, UC was able to rally together to hold on for the set victory 26-24.

Attacking errors was the theme for the Golden Eagles in the second set as they had 11. Despite putting together 14 kills, they could not make up for the amount of attacking errors as they lost the set 25-21.

Charleston was able to turn it around in the third set as they put up 16 kills while limiting the attacking errors to only four. They also put together a .300 hitting percentage resulting in a set win by a score of 25-20.

With the Golden Eagles leading 2-1 they looked to put away the Mountain Lions away in the fourth set, and that is exactly what they did. They added 15 more kills to the day while posting a .306 hitting percentage and went on to win the final set of the match 25-18.

Senior Janeese VerVelde led the offensive charge as she recorded 16 kills as well as three aces. Senior Kelsey Matusic was all over the floor as she was able to record 27 digs and three aces. Freshman Jaxin Melby was able to contribute 10 kills and junior Catherine Morris was able to put up nine kills and five blocks in the 3-1 UC victory.

The Golden Eagles will be back at home this weekend as they will play Frostburg State on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. and Fairmont State Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
