FRANKFORT, KY – Charleston traveled down to Frankfort, KY to take on Kentucky State University in a mid-week matchup. The Golden Eagles were able to take the game from the Thorobreds by a score of three sets to two.
In the first set, Charleston battled the Thorobreds in a closely contested match. Charleston was able to get off nine kills while Kentucky State had 11. The Golden Eagles were unable to take the set though as they lost by a score of 25-23.
UC was able to come back in the second set as they were able to tally 12 kills accompanied by a .206 kill percentage. This resulted in a set win for the Golden Eagles as they won by a score of 25-23.
In the third set, Charleston was able to capitalize on mistakes made by the Thorobreds. Kentucky State posted a - .188 kill percentage, proving to hurt their chances to win the set. Charleston went on to win the set by a score of 25-13.
Kentucky State felt the pressure in the fourth set needing to win it to force the fifth. The Thorobreds were able to come back taking the set by a score of 25-20.
In the fifth set, Charleston was able to pull out the win tallying 12 kills in the 15-12 set win.
Freshman
Jaxin Melby lead the charge for the Golden Eagles as she racked up 11 kills in the game. Sophomore
Brianna Washburn was also a big factor in the game, she was able to help the cause by contributing 10 kills for the Golden Eagles. Senior
Sydney Burt tallied nine kills, four aces and six digs. Senior
Kelsey Matusic was able to record 17 digs with two aces and Senior
Janeese VerVelde had eight kills and two aces.
The Golden Eagles will finally be back at home this Friday Oct. 4 with a doubleheader against Central State and Salem University at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
