CHARLESTON, W, VA. – The Golden Eagles returned home today as they took on Central State University and Salem University. UC went 2-0 on the day beating both Central State and Salem.
Charleston took on Central State at 3:00 p.m. winning the match 3-1.
In the first set, the Marauders battled the Golden Eagles throughout the set. Despite having eight kills to Charleston's 12, Central State was able to win the set by a score of 26-24.
Once the second set hit, the golden Eagles rallied together and did not look back. They were able to post 12 more kills accompanied by a .159 kill percentage allowing them to pull ahead 25-19 and even the match at a 1-1 score.
In the third set, Charleston had 12 more kills and raised their kill percentage to .258 and took the set 25-12.
With only one set win remaining between UC and a victory, they stood up to the challenge. They were able to put together 18 kills with a whopping .571 kill percentage to put the Marauders away and win the match.

Janeese VerVelde led the charge in this game as she recorded 15 kills. Not far behind her was sophomore
Brianna Washburn and freshman
Jaxin Melby. They contributed 12 kills each to help pull the Golden Eagles to victory.
In the second game, UC carried over a lot of momentum from the first game winning the match 3-0.
In the first set, Charleston came out firing as they rallied together to put up 18 kills while Salem could only manage to put up two. UC won the set by a score of 25-9.
The Tigers showed a bit more life in the second set as they put up eight kills but could not out match the Golden Eagles as they recorded 14 kills and ultimately won the set 25-19.
In the third set, Charleston proved to be too much for the Tigers to handle as they recorded 16 more kills and won the set 25-8.
It was more of the same in the second game for VerVelde, Melby and Washburn. VerVelde recorded 12 more kills, Melby added 14 more on the day and Washburn put up 9 more.
The Golden Eagles improved their record to 5-13 on the year. They will be back in action this Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. as they will be on the road to take on West Virginia State University.
