UC Falls To Rival WVSU On The Road 3-1

INSTITUTE, W, Va. – The Golden Eagles made the short trip to West Virginia State University this evening for a rivalry match-up against the Yellow Jackets. Despite hanging with WVSU throughout the game, UC came up on the short end of the stick as they lost three sets to one.
 
Charleston battled in the first set putting together 16 kills with a .273 hitting percentage while the Yellow Jackets offense had 19 kills with a .381 kill percentage. Charleston hung with WVSU the entirety of the set but could not finish the job as they lost by a score of 31-29.
 
In the second set, Charleston was able to bounce back putting up 10 kills with a .286 hitting percentage while the Yellow Jackets had nine kills but had a hitting percentage of .103. The Golden Eagles were able to capitalize on WVSU's mistakes allowing them to win the set by a score of 25-15.
 
The third set was closely contested as Charleston had 11 kills accompanied by a .190 hitting percentage and West Virginia State had 16 kills with a .214 hitting percentage. Although the Yellow Jackets had seven attacking errors in the set, they still managed to pull out the set win as they prevailed 25-21.
 
Charleston came out in the fourth set looking to do all they could to push the game to a fifth set. Ultimately, they came up empty as they only put up seven kills with a - .027 hitting percentage. WVSU went on to win the set 25-20.
 
Freshman Jaxin Melby had another good performance tonight to continue her success in the outside position. She was able to get off 14 kills, a .289 hitting percentage and had seven digs along with it. Sophomore Brianna Washburn was able to tally 12 kills in the game, senior Sydney Burt had nine kills and senior Kelsey Matusic contributed 19 digs in the game as well.
 
The Golden Eagles will be back at home for two games this weekend. The first against Glenville State College on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m. and the second against Concord on Saturday Oct. 12 at 11:00 a.m.
