UC Falls to West Virginia State 3-0

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Golden Eagles took on their rivals West Virginia State University this evening at home. Despite a good effort, they came up short falling to the Yellow Jackets 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game from the very beginning was filled with energy. Both teams came out ready to play and fed off of the energy from the crowd on hand. The Golden Eagles tallied 15 kills in the set with a .286 hitting percentage. They also had two blocks and a single serving ace. The Yellow Jackets also tallied 15 kills along with a .208 hitting percentage. Despite putting up slightly better numbers than WVSU, UC fell to the Yellow Jackets 25-20.
 
The energy in the building and between both teams stayed high for the second set. Charleston was able to add 13 more kills to their night as well as posting a .136 hitting percentage and one block. The Yellow Jackets had 14 kills in the set along with a .233 hitting percentage. They also added four blocks and two aces as they went on to take set two 25-22.
 
In the third set, UC had 15 more kills and had a .204 hitting percentage as well. The Yellow Jackets had 15 kills as well with a .316 hitting percentage. Charleston trailed the Yellow Jackets 1-10 at one point in the game but eventually came back to close the gap. They could not make a full comeback though as they ultimately lost the set 26-24.
 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Rachel Phalen had 16 kills in the match, Erin Thomas had 29 assists and Kelsey Matusic had 11 digs.

The Golden Eagles will be back at home this weekend as they will take on Davis & Elkins on Friday and Wesleyan on Saturday.
