Golden Eagles Conclude Season at West Liberty on Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Football team will pack their bags for one last road trip, wrapping up their season on Saturday at West Liberty with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles (7-3, 6-3 MEC), come off a 41-14 win over Concord on Senior Day and are currently 5th in the MEC after putting together a three-game win streak.

For Starters:
  • In last Thursdays' win against WVSU, Tyreik McAllister rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 12 rush attempts
  • Mike Strachan continued to climb the national ranks, adding two touchdowns to his season total of 18 against Concord. Strachan ranks 2nd in NCAA Division II behind Zimari Manning Tarleton State who has 19.
  • Kei Beckham is seventh in the nation in passes defended and Top 40 in interceptions.
  • Brant Grisel went 19-for-25, adding 195 yards and 3 TD against Concord and ranks 7th in Division II in passing yards with 2,946.
 
Last Game (Concord):
 
Six minutes into the first quarter, Brant Grisel connected with Tremaine Ross on an 8-yard pass putting the Golden Eagles on the board first. With 5:22 to play in the first quarter Grisel found Mike Strachan to conclude a 6-play drive bringing the score to 14-0.
 
The Golden Eagles went up 17-0 after a 44-yard FG attempt from Tim McCutchen to start the second quarter for the Golden Eagles. Just over six minutes later, McCutchen converted on a 34-yard attempt giving Charleston the 20-point lead.  
 
Charleston got the ball back with 2:35 to play in the second quarter and took the ball on 5-play 24-yard drive, ending with an 8-yard pass to Mike Stachan for the 27-0 lead heading into the break.
 
Tyreik McAllister opened up the second half for the Golden Eagles with a 9-yard run for this first touchdown of the game. The Golden Eagles clung to the 34-0 score until the opening drive of the fourth quarter as Tywan Pearce caught a 28-yard pass from Matt Shearer for Concords first score of the game.
 
Two minutes later, the Golden Eagles answered with a 62-yard run from McAllister that put Charleston up 41-7 with 12:00 left to play.
 
Concord's Derek Kincaid caught a 34-yard pass from Shearer for Concord's last score of the game.

About the Opposition

The Hilltoppers come into Saturday 5-5, 4-5 MEC. After a pair of MEC losses to Fairmont State and Urbana, West Liberty scored nine points in the last 74 seconds last Saturday to rally past West Virginia Wesleyan, 23-20 at Cebe Ross Field. Starting Quarterback Zach Phillips led the way for the Hilltoppers going 25-of-44 for 272 yards through the air with three touchdowns while wideout Christian Rita added six receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.
 
West Liberty ranks 91st in the country in total offense with 358.0 yards per game. In addition, the Hilltoppers are led by Senior Quarterback Zach Phillips who in eight games has thrown for 2,107 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
 
The Hilltoppers are led on the defensive side by linebacker Logan Deri who has recorded 55 total tackles on the season (40 solo). David Gilcreast adds 28 tackles of his own while leading the team in sacks with 5.0 for a loss of 36 yards.
