Record-Setting Year for Golden Eagles in 2019

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Football team wrapped up their 2019 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Hilltoppers of West Liberty 34-26. With the win, Charleston finished the campaign on a four-game win streak, ending their season at 8-3 (7-3 MEC).

Charleston set a handful of records on the offensive side of the ball in their best season since 2015 when the Pat Kirkland led Golden Eagles finished the year 10-2 (9-1 MEC). This season, the Golden Eagles averaged 35.64 points per game, an increase of over 10 PPG from the 2018 season when Charleston averaged 24.55 points per contest.

Tyreik McAllister capped off his 2019 season with a ground-breaking 355 yards rushing performance against West Liberty to break the school record of 301-yards in a single game previously held by Jordan Roberts in 2012. McAllister's performance gave him the most rushing yards in a single game by a Division II player this season, previously held by Michael Zeman from Colorado School of Mines with 321 yards.

Along with holding the Division II single-game mark, McAllister's 39 rush attempts against West Liberty on Saturday was the most all-time by a UC player since 2003, the same year that football resumed at Charleston after Morris Harvey College's last season of football in 1956. McAllister finished the season with a total of 1,199 yards, the third highest single-season total in UC history.

Redshirt Junior Wide Receiver Mike Strachan is set to break the all-time UC touchdown record by the time his playing career at Charleston is finished. This season alone, the Freeport, Bahamas native set UC single-season records in:
  • Receiving Yards (1,319) - Breaking his own previous record of 1,007 set in 2018.
  • Receiving Touchdowns (19) - Breaking the 70-year record of 13 held by Charlie Hubbard in 1950 who went on to be drafted by the New York Giants after his playing days at Morris Harvey College.
  • Receptions (78) - Breaking the record of 60 set by Terrance Spencer in 2006.
In addition to single-season records, Strachan broke the single-game records of:
  • Receptions (13) – Set against Urbana on September 12th and also holds the 2nd place spot of 12 receptions set a month later against Notre Dame College
  • Receiving Yards (207) – Set on October 12th against Notre Dame College, breaking the previous record of 186 set in 2010 by Andre Higgins.
Strachan's breakout season allowed the Wide Receiver to receive Division II Top-10 marks for the 2019 season in receiving touchdowns, receiving yards, receptions, and receiving yards per game.

Senior Quarterback Brant Grisel led the offense under center for the Golden Eagles this season. The Apex, North Carolina native set a handful of single season passing records during the 2019 campaign, including:
  • Passing Yards (3,117) – Breaking the previous mark by just under 1,000 yards (2,170) set by Jeremy Johnson in 2015.
  • Passing Touchdowns (27) – Toppling the 70-year record set by Pete Anania of Morris Harvey College in 1950 who finished the season with 19.
  • Pass Attempts (357) – Breaking Corey Isner's mark of 251 set in 2006. Grisel alone attempted 45 passes against Division I-FCS opponent Valparaiso in the Golden Eagles 19-13 win on September 28th.
  • Completions (217) – Prior record set by Isner in 2006 with 147.
Grisel's 2019 campaign moved him into 3rd all-time in a UC career in yards, completions, and attempts while finishing 4th in touchdown passes. In addition, Grisel set all five of the top-5 single-game passing performances in Charleston history during the 2019 season, with his top performance coming against Notre Dame College where the Senior passed for 464-yards while finishing with three touchdowns. Grisel finished 8th nationally in passing yards, 11th in touchdowns, and 24th in passing efficiency this season.

Other season marks broken on the offensive side of the ball come from Detroit, Michigan native Tremaine Ross. The Senior Wide Receiver tallied 186 yards receiving on October 12th against Notre Dame College and now holds the 2nd most yards receiving in a single game behind Strachan who set the mark in the same game. In addition, Ross finished the year Top-10 in UC history with 678-yards in a season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Senior Defensive Back Kei Beckham led the Golden Eagles with 4 interceptions, good for Top-5 all-time in a single season at Charleston. The Trotwood, Ohio native finished the season Top-5 nationally in Passes Defended, ending the season with 16 passes broken up while averaging 1.8 passes defended per contest.
