PREVIEW: NCAA DII Cross Country National Championship

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- University of Charleston men's cross country is making their second straight NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championship this Saturday. California State, Sacramento and the Sacramento Sports Commission will host the 2019 NCAA DII men's and women's cross country championships at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California.

The 20th ranked Golden Eagles are led by head coach Nick Bias who is in his sixth season at the helm of University of Charleston men's cross country.  The two-time Mountain East Conference and USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year has his Golden Eagles set for a top-20 finish at this year's National Championship.  UC made their first team appearance in last year's NCAA DII National Championship, finishing 22nd overall in their debut.  Bias has taken the team to previously unreached heights, claiming the last two Mountain East and Atlantic Region titles and has been ranked as high as 9th nationally this 2019 season.

Bias will lean heavily on senior Jack Mastandrea, who enters the championship as the 8th ranked individual runner according to The Stride Report.  Mastandrea, the MEC and Atlantic Region Men's XC Athlete of the Year, won the Atlantic Region title by 30 seconds and has been near the top of every meet he's been entered in this season.  Mastandrea won't be alone and has help in All-MEC and All-Atlantic Region performers in David Cecchi (3x), Kyle Hinson, and Alex Kitony who all finished inside of the top-15 at the Atlantic Region Championship.  Cameron Lee joins the squad and brings valuable championship experience to the Golden Eagle seven, competing in last season's National Championship.  Rounding out the group is newcomer, Steve Korir, a junior transfer from Tiffin University who looks to improve from a tough performance at the Atlantic Region Championship.
