Golden Eagles Take Down Pioneers 3-1

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – UC traveled to Glenville today to take on the Pioneers in an afternoon match, one in which the Golden Eagles came out on top in 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Charleston came out today ready to play as they rallied for 16 kills in the set and a .220 hitting percentage. The Pioneers had 13 kills with a .257 hitting percentage. That did not prove to be enough for Glenville as UC went on to take the set by a score of 25-22
 
Charleston kept the pressure on in the second set as they tallied 16 more kills with a .286 hitting percentage. Glenville posted 12 kills and a .206 hitting percentage. Charleston seemed to outplay the Pioneers on offense as UC went on to win the set by a score of 25-20.
 
Glenville did not go down easy. They came back in the third set racking up 19 kills with a .341 hitting percentage. Charleston had 12 kills in the set but could only manage to put together a .190 hitting percentage. Glenville went on to win the set 25-20.
 
With the game being pushed to a fourth set, Charleston looked to put the Pioneers away. They were able to add 15 more kills to the day while Glenville could only manage to get seven kills in the set. With some mistakes made on the Glenville side, the Golden Eagles went on to take the set and ultimately the game as they won the set 25-18.
 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Both senior Janeese VerVelde and sophomore Rachel Phalen contributed 16 kills in the match. Vervelde was also able to record seven blocks on defense. Sophomore Erin Thomas recorded 55 assists, a career-high for her, and senior Sydney Burt had 13 kills as well as four blocks.
 
UP NEXT
UC will be back at home all next week as they will wrap up the regular season. They will begin the week with a game on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. against rival West Virginia State. They will then play two games on the weekend. One on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. against Davis & Elkins and then on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3:00 p.m.
