Golden Eagles Get Sweep of Cardinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles (14-10, 8-2 MEC) swept the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals (4-19, 3-7 MEC) in MEC play on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1:
With Jordan Bailey on second, the Golden Eagles struck first on a single from Gianfranco Morello in the top of the first.
 
Charleston extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. An error by the Cardinal second basemen allowed Morello and Bailey score for UC. The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the third bringing in two runs to cut the Golden Eagles lead to 3-2.
 
Morello singled to the left side, giving Bailey and Drew Hefner the go ahead for the 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
 
The Cardinals scored one final run in the bottom of the fifth, but it would not be enough to down the Golden Eagles who took game one 5-3.
 
Austin Henrich tabbed his second victory of the year, pitching all seven innings, striking out nine batters.
 
GAME 2:
Junior center fielder Colby Johnson led the Golden Eagles offense with four hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs. While Seth Nightingale picked up the win after pitching four innings.

Charleston surged ahead of the Cardinals in game two taking a 6-0 lead before the bottom of the second.


Wheeling got on the board in the bottom of the second bringing the score to 6-1.
 
Drew Hefner scored on a double from Jesse Elliot in the top of the third bringing the score to 7-1.
 
The Cardinals tacked on three runs on an error by the Golden Eagles bringing the score to 7-4 in the bottom of the third. WJU cut the UC lead to three runs on a Single from Colin Caven in the third inning.
 
The Golden Eagles answered, extending their lead to six runs in the top of the fourth after tacking on four runs.
 
The Golden Eagles scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 14-6 lead over the Cardinals before WJU would score just two more, giving UC the 14-8 victory.

The Golden Eagles will take on the West Liberty Hilltoppers on Monday, April 1. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
