FAIRMONT, W.V.a -- Charleston men's tennis earned a Mountain East Conference road victory Thursday evening after cruising past Fairmont State University, 6-1.
The Golden Eagles move to 8-7 overall and more importantly 4-1 in MEC play to remain in a tie for second with West Liberty in the Mountain East standings. Â
UC earned the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with both of those courts finishing first. Â Jason Prince put the Golden Eagles up 2-0 after serving up a pair of bagels in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Fairmont's Drew Hawthorne. Â Moments later Tom Andrews got Charleston one points away from clinching the match with an easy straight set victory at No. 4 singles over the Falcons' Ryan Leo. Â Putting the finishing touches on Thursday's victory was Ben Lakeman at No. 1 singles, as the Englishman remained unbeaten in MEC singles play following a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to clinch the match.
Charleston returns to the courts on Sunday afternoon to host Shaw University. Â First serve with the Bears is set for 2:00 p.m.
