CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Golden Eagle men's tennis enters as the No. 2 seed at Mountain East Conference Men's Tennis Tournament set for this week (May 3-5) at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center in Huntington, W.Va.
The University of Charleston finished 6-1 in the MEC to end the season as the MEC regular season runner-up behind West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Bobcats and Golden Eagles will each have a first-round bye for the tournament. Charleston will look to improve on last season's semifinal exit where they fell to Fairmont St., 5-3, behind another year of experience from the young Golden Eagles.  UC, without a senior on the squad, will look to their junior leadership in Ben Lakeman, Alek Gracin and Jason Prince to get the Golden Eagles into Sunday's final. Â
Charleston holds a No. 5 NCAA DII Atlantic Region ranking, one spot behind the Bobcats, entering the MEC Championships.
Fairmont State is the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 seed Shepherd at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 3. That match will follow No. 4 West Liberty against No. 5 Concord at 2 p.m.
Charleston will get the winner of Fairmont State and Shepherd.  UC defeated both Fairmont and Shepherd in the regular season, 6-1 and 5-1 respectively.
