CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- University of Charleston men's tennis suffered their first Mountain East Conference loss Sunday afternoon as the visiting Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan College defeated the Golden Eagles, 6-1, at Schoenbaum Courts.
UC fell behind early after getting swept in doubles despite a pair of close matches at No. 1 & No 2 doubles. Â Ben Lakeman and Joao Tayar forced a tiebreaker at No. 1 but eventually were handed a loss by Wesleyan.
Things didn't get much for Charleston as they hit the courts for singles play with the Bobcats taking five of the six singles matches to earn a road win over UC, 6-1. Â Singles courts one through four were tightly contested but it was only Ben Lakeman at No. 1 who was able to come out on the winning end of his match, 6-4, 7-5, over his Bobcat opponent.
The Golden Eagles and Bobcats are likely to meet again in the MEC Tournament later this month. Â Up next for Charleston is a trip to Fairmont State University on Thursday afternoon.
