HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Charleston cruised past Fairmont State, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center to advance to Sunday's championship finals against West Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Golden Eagles won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles losing just one game combined in those two sets to take the doubles point.
Tom Andrews then won 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 sinlges to grab a 2-0 lead for UC. Adam Malouf won 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles to put the Golden Eagles on the verge of clinching. The other three singles matches were close, and Ben Lakeman emerged as a winner at No. 1 singles defeating Lucas Alves, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the match for UC.
UC's lone Mountain East Conference blemish came to the top-ranked and nationally ranked Bobcats. In April's regular season matchup between the MEC finalists, the Bobcats prevailed 6-1 over Charleston ultimately giving Wesleyan the MEC regular season title.
