CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Golden Eagles closed out the final games of the MEC/PSAC tournament earlier today with a game against Mercyhurst University at 1:00 p.m. and Shippensburg University at 7:00 p.m. Charleston dropped both of the games today both by a score of 3-0.
The Golden Eagles came out of the gates ready to play in the first game putting up a fight against Mercyhurst. They had 10 kills in the first set. Their efforts came up short though as they dropped the set by a score of 25-18.
They continued to battle in the second set, hanging with the Lakers. They tallied seven kills but could not outdo Mercyhurst as they rallied together to put up 17 kills. The Lakers won the set by a score of 25-21.
UC was unable to keep up with the Lakers in the third set as Mercyhurst put together 19 kills. A barrage of attacks that the Golden Eagles ultimately could not keep pace with. Charleston dropped the set by a final score of 25-13.
Charleston was back at it later in the evening to take on the Shippensburg University Raiders.
The Raiders came out of the gate ready to play. They put together 17 kills, while the Golden Eagles could only manage to grind out seven kills accompanied with eight attacking errors. The result of the set was a Charleston loss as they dropped the set 25-13.
UC looked better in the second set as they were able to put together nine kills. The Raiders offense still proved to be too much though, as the Golden Eagles fell 25-17.
Shippensburg came into the third set with a lot of momentum from the previous two sets and was able to keep it going. The Raiders were able to put together 14 more kills while UC could only manage to put up five. Shippensburg stayed on the attack the entire set closing it out by a score of 25-11.
Overall, the Golden Eagles came out of the tournament 1-3. They will be back in action again this coming weekend in Louisville, KY as they will be playing in the Louisville Kickoff Classic. The first game of that tournament is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20 at 3:15 p.m.
