Box Score PHILIPPI, W. Va. – The Golden Eagles traveled down to Philippi, W. Va. To take on Alderson Broaddus in a mid-week non-conference matchup. Charleston was able to force the game into the fifth set but could not hold on for the win.
UC was able to keep the first set close. They tallied 13 kills while Alderson Broadus was able to match them with 13 kills of their own. The Golden Eagles were not able to match the Battlers kill percentage, as Charleston posted a .171 percentage and Alderson Broaddus was able to rack up a .233 percentage. That proved to be too much for Charleston as they lost the first set 27-25.
The Golden Eagles continued to battle in the second set as they put together 14 kills and a .321 kill percentage. The Battlers were determined to outdo them though as they tallied 15 kills and a .458 kill percentage. Alderson Broaddus won the set by a score of 25-22.
With their backs against the wall in the third set, Charleston was able to put up 13 kills with a .370 kill percentage that ultimately resulted in a set win by a score of 25-19.
Charleston continued to battle and show plenty of life in the fourth set. They were able to put up 21 kills in the set and recorded a .302 kill percentage. Alderson Broaddus did not have an answer to Charleston's offensive onslaught as the Golden Eagles won the set 25-22.
UC was able to push the game into the fifth set but were unable to close out the comeback. They tallied seven more kills, but that was not enough to put away the Battlers as they lost the set by a score of 15-10.
There were many positives to take from this game as sophomore
Rachel Phalen recorded a career-high 24 kills in the game. Senior
Janeese VerVelde also was able to keep the momentum she had from the previous weekend rolling as she recorded 17 kills while also tallying 4 blocks. Junior
Jessica Sunnenberg had five aces in the match, sophomore
Erin Thomas recorded a career-high 55 assists and Senior
Kelsey Matusic had 12 digs.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on the road this weekend with a match against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday, Sep. 27 at 7:00 p.m. and another game on Saturday, Sep. 28 against Davis & Elkins at 2:00 p.m.
