CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Tomorrow is opening day of the 2020 season for the university of Charleston baseball team. The Golden Eagles will be hosting their first game at the Welch Athletics Complex since its opening in September of 2019 against Alderson Broaddus University.
The Battlers head into this game having played a full series already against Coker University where they went 1-3 this past weekend. In 2019 they posted a 21-29-1 overall record and were eliminated from their respective league tournament after the first two games.
In UC's history, they have taken on Alderson Broaddus a total of 12 times. Their records are split against each other as both UC and Alderson Broaddus have six wins in head-to-head matchups. In their most recent meeting, UC came out on top by a score of 14-8.
Charleston will be playing their first game of the season at a brand-new facility and under first-year head coach
Robbie Britt. Coach Britt will be taking the reins from
Andrew Wright who led the Golden Eagles to a super-regional just a season ago and was just one win away from heading to the DII College World Series.
With so many things that are new with the program, there will be some familiar faces out on the field for the Golden Eagles. Pre-season first team All-Atlantic region pick, OF
Colby Johnson, will be back to play in his senior season. Johnson batted .338 last season recording 10 HR, 10 2B, 2 3B, 57 RBI, .554 SLG, and a .958 OPS.
Also returning is starting pitcher
Austin Henrich who was tabbed as a second team All-Atlantic Region pick. Henrich posted a record of 9-3 as one of the main guys in the rotation last season as he posted a 3.74 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, threw 7 complete games, with 91.1 IP, fanning 87 batters and only allowed five home runs.
The Golden Eagles will also be returning junior infielder
Jordan Bailey, junior outfielder
Hayden Cartt and senior infielder
Jesse Elliott. On the bump, UC will be excited to have junior
Seth Nightingale, senior
Jeffrey Wong, and senior
Robert Fultineer back to sling the rock.
The game against Alderson Broaddus is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 1:00 p.m. Following the mid-week matchup, UC will travel to North Carolina to take on Wingate University in a three-game series from Feb. 14-16.
