UC Sweeps the Pioneers on the Weekend With a 3-1 Victory on Saturday

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Golden Eagles took on the Pioneers from Sacred Heart University for the second time this weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team seemed to be able to gain any momentum in the set as both teams continued to trade blows keeping a tie score through the middle of the set at 15 all. Charleston would then rattle off three straight points to take an 18-15 lead over the Pioneers before the first timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Sacred Heart would answer with four straight points of their own to take the lead 19-18 over Charleston. SHU would take the lead 21-19 over UC before the second timeout of the set was taken. The Pioneers would continue to build their lead to four as they went up 24-20 before the third timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Charleston would answer with two kills coming from Lachlan Bray and Max Senica to bring the score to 24-22 Sacred Heart before the fourth timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Charleston would make it a 24-23 game with an ace from Diego Villafane. They were unable to mount the comeback though as SHU took the set 25-23. 
 
Charleston had 13 kills on 26 attempts with seven attacking errors giving them a .231 hitting percentage. The Pioneers had 11 kills on 23 attempts with one attacking errors giving them a .435 hitting percentage. Charleston had five aces, no blocks and five service errors. SHU had no aces, four blocks and four service errors. 
 
Charleston would jump out to a 9-5 lead early on in the second set. UC would extend their lead to six as they took a 13-7 lead over the Pioneers before the first timeout of the set was taken. 
 
The Pioneers would make it interesting as they were able to bring the game back to even at a score of 18-18 before the second timeout of the set was taken. 
 
UC would come out of the timeout to take the lead 21-18 on three straight points. The Pioneers then brought the game back to within one at a score of 21-20. The Pioneers would come back to make the game even at a score of 23 all. Charleston would take the advantage on a kill from Max Senica putting UC up 24-23. SHU would answer back with a kill of their own to make it 24-24. Sacred Heart then added another kill to take the lead 25-24 before the third timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Max Senica would make the game even again as his kill would make it an even ballgame. He then put another kill down to give Charleston the lead 26-25 before the fourth timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Charleston would take the set win 27-25 on a ball-handling error by the Pioneers. 
 
UC had 17 kills on 33 attempts with five attacking errors giving them a .364 hitting percentage. SHU had 10 kills on 32 attempts with three attacking errors giving them a .219 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles tallied one ace, three blocks and seven service errors. The Pioneers had three aces, two blocks and three service errors in the set. 
 
Charleston would jump out to a 7-3 lead over Sacred Heart in the early stages of the third set before Sacred Heart took the first timeout. 
 
Charleston would continue to build their lead as they took control 14-8 in the middle portion of the set. Sacred Heart would battle their way back to bring the set even again at a score of 17 all. The Pioneers would take control of the lead 18-17 before the second timeout of the set was taken. 
 
The game would stay tied at a score of 22 all. Charleston would come back to regain the lead 24-22 before the third timeout of the set was taken by the Pioneers. 
 
SHU would come back with a point of their own to make it a 24-23 score before Charleston took the fourth timeout of the set. 
 
Charleston would come back after the timeout to take the set 25-23 to take the lead 2-1 over the Pioneers. 
 
Charleston had 12 kills on 27 attempts with seven attacking errors netting them a .285 hitting percentage. The Pioneers had 12 kills on 32 attempts with seven attacking errors giving them a .156 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles had two aces, two blocks and two service errors. SHU had two aces, one block and four service errors in the set. 
 
Charleston would hop out to another early lead as they went up 8-6 over the Pioneers in the fourth set. Sacred Heart would battle back to take the lead 11-9 over the Golden Eagles. UC would come back to regain the lead at 17-16 before the first timeout of the set was taken.  
 
UC would extend their lead to 21-16 after coming back from the timeout. The Pioneers would bring the game back to within two as the score reached 23-21 UC before the second timeout of the set was taken. 
 
Following the timeout, Sacred Heart would bring the game to an even score at 23 all. Lachlan Bray would put the Golden Eagles up 24-23 after a kill. UC would take the final point of the match on an attacking error by the Pioneers.
 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Junior Max Senica had a season-high in kills with 15 as well as a career-high of 13 digs. Sophomore Lachlan Bray had a season-high 18 kills as well as a career-high five aces. Junior Stefan Krumerac had a career-high in digs of 15. Sophomore Diego Villafane tied his season-high of 46 assists on the day.
 
UP NEXT 
Charleston will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Saint Francis University on Friday and to Penn State on Saturday.
