ORLANDO, FL – The University of Charleston Men's Tennis team (2-2, 0-0 MEC) dropped their Spring Break opener to the #15 Nationally ranked Mary Washington (4-0, 0-0 CAC) by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the USTA Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Charleston split the singles matchups 3-3,, with Ben Lakeman, Joao Tayar, and Alex Martinez all winning their matchups. After dropping his first set 6-3, Lakeman went on to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-1. At the #2 spot, Tayar won consecutive sets over Andrew Watson (6-1, 6-4) while Martinez defeated Michael Fleming in straight sets in the #4 position (6-3, 6-4).
Jason Prince was defeated in the #3 spot by Joseph Brown in straight sets (4-6, 4-6).
In the doubles, Mary Washington was able to take the point from the Golden Eagles to secure the win. The pair of Lakeman and Tayar dropped to Moses Hutchison and Fleming 8-6 while Alek Gracin and Prince fell to Priyan Desilva and Brown 6-8. In the final doubles match of the day, Martinez and Adam Malouf fell to Cole Tecee and Watson 3-8.
