UC Takes On Ohio Valley In a Mid-Week Matchup At Home

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – With anticipated inclement weather in Ohio tomorrow, the mid-week match between UC and Ohio Valley University has been changed to be played at the Welch Athletic Complex with a noon start tomorrow afternoon.

A LOOK AT OHIO VALLEY
The Fighting Scots come into the mid-week match with a current record of 2-9 playing each of their games either on the road or at a neutral location. They have dropped their last three games and are scheduled to play a game today against Salem University at 3:00 p.m.

As a team, Ohio Valley has a batting average of .221 with 75 total hits, 11 doubles, three triples, 28 RBI ad 115 strikeouts.

On the mound, the Scots have a 10.86 ERA, they have given up 116 hits, 111 runs, 105 of them earned, allowed 87 walks and have struck out 73 batters. Other teams are currently hitting .325 against OVU.

The Scots are led offensively by redshirt junior Mitchell Lohr. So far in the season, he has posted a .333 average with 11 hits, one home run, four RBI, 5 walks, and 10 strikeouts.

On the mound, the best pitcher for OVU has been sophomore Alex Jarell. He has started four games for the Scots, has received a no-decision in each of his games, has posted a 2.00 ERA, he has pitched 18.0 innings, given up 12 hits, four earned runs, 17 walks and has recorded 25 strikeouts.

The head coach for the Scots is Chad Porter who is entering his fifth season as the skipper for OVU. In his five years there, he has an overall record of 74-139.

In the past, Charleston has taken on the Fighting Scots in 10 games. UC has a 7-3 record against OVU. In their past five matchups, Charleston has come out on top. Their most recent meeting came back in 2014 where Charleston was victorious at home by a score of 8-3.

"They have had some success this year against some pretty good teams like Lincoln Memorial and Glenville State, they have some decent arms on the mound, some guys that will give you some fits. Even offensively they have a couple of guys that can run into some balls and can run the bases particularly well. So, the thing that I am most concerned about is that we play fundamentally sound baseball on our end and if we do that, as cliché as it may sound, we should be fine tomorrow," said head coach Robbie Britt.

CHARLESTON'S OUTLOOK
UC is coming off of a weekend in which they took two games from PSAC opponent Shippensburg University in a three-game series. UC has an overall record of 8-5 on the year with a 7-3 record when playing at home.

As a team UC is hitting .256 with 79 runs on 64 RBIs. They have 99 hits on the season with nine home runs, two triples and 23 doubles. They have earned 64 walks and 20 hit by pitches while striking out 109 times.

Braxton Boddorf leads the team in batting average so far this season with an average of .429. He has 18 hits in 42 at-bats accompanied by one home run and three doubles. He has tallied seven RBIs hitting in the nine-hole.

Jacob Kaiser has been the go-to arm out of the pen this season. He has thrown 11.2 innings, allowed only six hits, three earned runs, allowed four walks, has struck out six batters with an ERA of 2.31.

With the mid-week game in place this weekend, everything should go smoothly in terms of preparation for the weekend. Usually, the team will take a day during the week away from skill practice to keep the competitive juices flowing by scrimmaging one another. In this case, UC will get to face another team to fill that void. It should allow for some different arms to get some innings and allow for some other people to get some at-bats throughout the lineup.

"It will be a great opportunity to play against somebody in a different color and compete," said Robbie Britt. "The midweek game, there is some value in maybe giving some guys some rest and trying to get some other guys some chances that haven't necessarily had them before, but the number one thing is we will put the best nine out there to give us a shot to win the game that is in front of us. We have a number of different options that can help us to that, but we are going to put the best nine out."
