How it Happened
The Golden Eagles competed this spring at the same course, Avalon Lakes, but would end up finishing third. This year the Golden Eagles would take home gold, finishing as wire-to-wire champions at Avalon Lakes Golf Course in Warren, Ohio. As a group the Golden Eagles combined for a score of 907, 43 strokes over par, and would take home the team trophy for the Mountain East Conference. Charleston combined for a score of 298 on the second round which would end up being the best round of the tournament for any team.
The 7,200 yard course would prove to be no issue for Charleston's Mitch Hoffman and Erik Ulvang, both of whom shot no higher than 77 on the weekend. Hoffman finished his rounds with scores of 74,73, and 76 respectively earning him the top spot in the individual leaderboard at the tournament. Ulvang came in a close second in overall scoring, he would shoot a combined +9 on the week, placing him just under Hoffman.
All five of UC's competitors would end the tournament in the top 15. David Scragg moved up five places after finishing with a closing round 74 that would see him finish in 6
th place overall.
Mitch Hoffman said this after being asked about playing with a lead, "I love that position. I've been able to put myself in that position a lot this year, and I've taken a lot from that in the past three or four tournaments that I won. That back nine was pretty stressful. I wasn't playing my best, but I was happy to be able to finish it off."
