Michelle Frew Announced As Head Softball Coach

Charleston, W.Va-  University of Charleston Athletic Director, Dr. Bren Stevens, announced the hiring of former Rollins College Head Coach, Michelle Frew.

Continuing in the tradition of athletic excellence, University of Charleston Director of Athletics, Dr. Bren Stevens, announced that Michelle Frew would be the next head softball coach. Stevens had this to say about the former Rollins College head coach, "I am pleased to announce Michelle Frew as the new leader of our women's softball program. Michelle's experience as a premier coach in NCAA Division II makes her an extraordinary hire for the Golden Eagles. Coach Frew possesses the coaching pedigree that makes her more than prepared to oversee and inspire a team comprised of talented athletes who have been remarkably successful both on and off the field."
Frew was a two-sport athlete at her Alma Mater, Eckerd College, earning All-Sunshine State Conference honors in basketball and softball. Michelle would go on to finish her career as the all-time leading scorer back in 1991. The same year she would be awarded the "Triton Award," given to the top women's athlete at the school. Coach Frew earned her bachelor's degree from Eckerd in May of 1991 and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Nova Southern.

She began her softball career by becoming the head coach at Edison Community College in Ft. Myers, FL, from 1992-95. There she would inherit a team that had never had a winning season. Frew would lead her teams to a combined overall record of 118-83. She was awarded Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading her squad to a 39-13 record with a 16-2 conference record.

From 1995-98, Frew served as the Rollins assistant women's basketball coach and helped the Tars post two 20+ victory seasons.

Frew was hired as the first full-time softball coach at Rollins and infused life into a program that had only won a total of eight games in the three seasons prior to her arrival. In her first three seasons, she led the Tars to 84 victories, including posting a 34-13 campaign in 1998, garnering her Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year honors. Coach Frew would add the SSC Coach of the Year honors in 2010 and 2012 as well. Additionally, Michelle has been recognized by the Rollins Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) as the Rollins Coach of the Year on two different occasions.

In 2016, Michelle Frew led the Tars to their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007. The Tars finished the regular season at 37-14-1 overall, with a 17-7 record in the Sunshine State Conference, and were ranked as high as 14 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 polls. Rollins earned themselves a bid to the NCAA South Regional as the number 6 seed and went on to win three straight games to claim their first NCAA South Region Championship.

Over her career, Coach Frew compiled an 857-362-1 record for Rollins College, which ranks her as the 16th winningest active Division II coach.

Frew replaces Kim Stiles, who left the program after five seasons to become the head softball coach for Holy Cross University.

Coach Frew said this about her new role as University of Charleston head softball coach, "I am so excited to join the Charleston family. I cannot put into words how welcoming everyone was on my visit. The administration, the coaches, and the players all made me feel right at home. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Stevens and the hiring committee for entrusting me to lead the Golden Eagles softball program. During the interview process, it was extremely evident that there is great support for athletics at Charleston. UC is the kind of place that I want to call home. I cannot wait to get started as we begin our work toward building a championship program."
