Golden Eagles Down Regional Opponent Edinboro, Win 4-1

CANTON, Ohio – The University of Charleston Men's Tennis picked up their first win of the season over regional opponent Edinboro University on Friday afternoon in Canton, Ohio by a score of 4-1. Due to court times, the remainder of the match was not completed. Charleston was led by John Giesberts, who won in convincing fashion, winning 6-3, 6-2 in the #1 spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Golden Eagles got out to a fast start, winning all three doubles matches of the afternoon. At the #1 position, Giesberts and and Frantisek Pirek won a well fought match, while Jake Magill and Krish Patel clinched the doubles points at #3 with a convincing 6-2 victory. Lennert Stevens and Marshall Dagostine were able to complete the doubles sweep, winning 7-6 at #2.
 
Moving to singles play, Charleston was already holding the match advantage at 1-0. Giesberts came out hot at the number one spot and won in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-2. Pirek, who helped Giesberts pick up a win in doubles, was able to notch his first collegiate victory at three position, breaking once in each set for a 6-4, 6-3 win.
 
Magill put in a fine display, winning a very physical match 6-1, 6-3, keeping his cool to take the clinch the win for the Golden Eagles at 4-1.
 
At time of clinch, Stevens and Patel were both on their way to impressive wins for the Golden Eagles, with both players a set up in their matches. Stevens took the first set in his match 6-4, as did Patel.
 
When asked about what this win meant for the program, head coach Matt Santen was excited about how it played out. "It was great to start regional play with a win. The boys played extremely well from top to bottom"
 
Assistant coach Sam Clarke is excited to see his team growing and moving in the right direction. "It was a very solid team performance", said Clarke. "The boys took care of business against a very strong Edinboro side and I am excited to get back to work and prepare for the next match".
