CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Women's Volleyball team competed in a doubleheader matchup with the Pioneers from Glenville State on Tuesday evening. The Golden Eagles took the first match of the night, defeating the Pioneers 3-1 and winning the fourth set in comeback fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Coming into Tuesday after capturing a pair of wins over Concord on Thursday night, the Golden Eagles picked up right where they left off, taking the first set of the match quite convincingly, winning 25-14. In the set, the Golden Eagles recorded 15 kills and a .304 hitting percentage compared to five kills and a -.034 percentage for the Pioneers. Despite picking up two more service errors than the Pioneers, the pair of
Beyonce Andrews and
Jaxin Melby led the way with three kills apiece.
In the second, the Pioneers took the early lead, but the Golden Eagles exploded back to take an 8-5 lead at nearly halfway mark in the set. With the set tied at 12-12, Charleston was able to regain the lead at 18-15 which forced the Pioneers into a timeout. Out of the break, the Pioneers brought their deficit within one point after a pair of errors from the Golden Eagles, and eventually tied the game at 22-22. Controlling the serve, the Pioneers surrendered took a 24-23 lead and then served the ball out of play, allowing Charleston to regain the serve. Despite the momentum going Charleston's way, the Pioneers scored the next two points to take the second set 26-24.
In the set, Charleston would record 17 kills to 11 for the Pioneers. After hitting over .300 once again to begin the set, the Golden Eagles would fall off towards the end, finishing with a .256%. Six service errors helped the Pioneers take the set.
In the third, Charleston jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the set, but the Pioneers answered with four straight to tie the set. Leading 12-11, Charleston tallied five straight of their own to take a 17-11 lead in the set which forced Glenville State into a timeout. Resuming play, the point streak would extend to nine led by
Makenzy Johnson at the serving position before Glenville State recontroled the serve while trailing 20-12. The set would end with Charleston winning 25-13 and taking a 2-1 advantage in the match.
In the fourth set, the Pioneers brought a sense of urgency and quickly took a 9-4 lead. As the lead grew to seven for the Pioneers (14-7), Charleston quickly shifted the momentum and forced a Glenville State timeout while cutting their deficit to just four.
Out of the break, the Pioneers extended their lead to seven once again (19-12) before Charleston powered their way back to an 8-1 run to trail just 22-20. Glenville scored the next point, but five straight from the Golden Eagles allowed for an amazing fourth set victory to take the match 3-1.
