BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Men's Tennis team handed Bluefield State a 4-3 loss, only their second Atlantic Region loss since both teams entered the Atlantic Regions in 2009.
Charleston got off to a slow start dropping all three courts and the doubles point. Alex Martinez evened the score with a quick win at number 6 singles by a score 6-1, 6-2. Bluefield went up 2-1 with a win at second singles. Charleston pulled even again with a win at number 4 singles with a win by Jake Magill with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
Bluefield pulled ahead once again with a win at number 3 singles. As third singles was finishing John Giesberts (1
st singles) fought off four match points in a second set tiebreaker to even the match at one set a piece. Four games into the third set, Bluefield's number player, Bau- Madsen, cramped and was unable to finish the match.
Giesberts won by a score of 1-6, 7-6, 2-2 (ret.). With the score tied at 3-3, It was Freshman Krish Patel clinching the match at number 5 singles by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
When asked about the match, Sam Clarke said "I was proud of the boys in handling tough windy conditions and showing great fight against a very talented team." Matt Santen gave credit to the injured Adrian Hiedelberger "We asked Adrian to step in and help coach this afternoon and we won all three courts that we assigned him to."
Man of the match was Alex Martinez for his convincing win at number six singles.
The win takes the Golden Eagles to a record 5-2. Next up is conference foe, Fairmont State University on Monday, March 29
th.
