Golden Eagles Fall in Regular Season Finale

Box Score CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Women's Volleyball team dropped their regular season finale at home to the Yellow Jackets from West Virginia State on Friday evening, falling 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, and after trailing 8-7 in the opening set, eventually saw themselves leading 11-8. Despite the Yellow Jackets tying the set at 12-12, the Golden Eagles scored three straight points to hold a 15-12 advantage which forced a State timeout.
 
In the set, the Golden Eagles seemed to be able to find the gaps in the Yellow Jacket defense, dumping balls softly over the block. While leading 19-15, the Yellow Jackets quickly gained momentum to tie the set at 21-21. With the Yellow Jackets closing in, Charleston was able to slam the door shut on the first set, taking it 25-22 behind a .333 team hitting percentage and five kills from Ally Fisher.
 
In the second set, the Yellow Jackets quickly hopped out to an early 7-2 lead. After taking four of the next five points and extending their lead to eight, the Yellow Jackets forced a Golden Eagle timeout.  
 
Out of the timeout, Charleston was unable to find a rhythm, as the Yellow Jackets used errors by the Golden Eagles to their advantage and take a 25-12.
 
The third set saw the teams go back-and-forth from the start, with the Golden Eagles playing with a. sense of urgency. Service aces and errors on the reception allowed for West Virginia State to regain momentum, and a 14-6 lead in the set. Forcing another Charleston timeout, the Yellow Jackets continues to roll, eventually taking the third set 25-13. In the set, Charleston recorded seven kills while hitting .286 compared to the Yellow Jackets .571%.
 
The fourth set would be the last, as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 17-7 lead and never looked back, taking the set 25-18 and the match 3-1

 
UP NEXT:

Charleston will await the seeding of the Mountain East Conference Tournament to decide who their next opponent will be. The first round of the tournament will be played at the highest seed in each matchup and will begin March 9th.
