Walk-Off Weekend: Charleston Scores Three in the 7th Inning, Defeats OVU

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston baseball team walked it off for the second time this weekend, beating the Fighting Scots from Ohio Valley by a score of 3-2 after working some seventh inning magic to seal the win. In the inning, Pete Costigan singled to open it up before being pinch ran for by Griffin AdkinsAfter Mitchell Vincent pinch hit for Jesse Elliott, he singled and advanced Adkins to third on an error by the left fielder to put runners on the corners. After OVU pitcher Klark Waterman retired the next two batters, Colby Johnson drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. With Drew Hefner stepping to the plate, the senior catcher doubled to center past the outstretched glove of Juan Lopez, bringing all three runners around to capture victory.

Key Moment
  • Ohio Valley took a 2-0 lead on a pair of opposite field home runs from Lizando Garcia and Robert Alonso. Other than that, Charleston starter Jackson Mandella (who was making his Charleston debut), surrendered just two more hits and was not tabbed for any other runs.
  • Hefner cleared the bases with a three-run double in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to secure a 3-2 win for Charleston.
How it Happened
  • The Fighting Scots got on the board in the first after Garcia homered to right field, giving OVU an early 1-0 lead.
  • Alonzo did the same in the second, giving the Scots a 2-0 lead, which would end the offense until the bottom of the seventh for both teams.
  • Mandella went on to not allow a hit for 4.1 innings following a single to Nick Puzzonia in the bottom of the second.
  • Costigan singled to open up the bottom of the seventh before being pinch ran for by Griffin Adkins. After Vincent pinch hit for Elliott, he singled and advanced Adkins to third on an error by the left fielder to put runners on the corners.
