CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Men's Tennis team dropped their home opener on Sunday to the Lakers of Grand Valley, 5-2. The Golden Eagles had a strong performance in their doubles matches which allowed UC to grab the point, winning at both #2 and #3. Both #2 and #3 were playing as partnerships for the first time and showed great composure in two quality matches.
In singles, John Giesberts continued his strong start to the season with a confident win at one. The rest of the lineup fought hard but fell short against a strong and experienced Grand Valley side. Frantisek Pirek bounced back from a tough first set to force a tie breaker in the second while Jake Magill fell in a tight two set battle.
Lennert Stevens pushed hard in his match, with some big hitting tennis but dropped his match 6-3, 6-4.
Alex Martinez and Jack Bowman made their first starts of the year for UC at #5 and #6, gaining valuable experience for this young UC side.
